Exterior Painters in Bristol

Brunel Decorators are exterior painters covering period and modern properties across Bristol’s premium suburbs and the wider city.
We’ve worked on stucco-rendered Georgian facades in Clifton, Victorian terraces in Redland and Southville, and Edwardian properties in Bishopston. We know what Bristol’s high rainfall does to an exterior that was specified incorrectly.
- Masonry walls: stucco, lime render, and brick
- Sash windows, casement frames, and all exterior timber woodwork
- Fascias, soffits, bargeboards, and guttering
- Front doors and porch surrounds
- Ironwork: balcony railings, gates, and ornamental metalwork
- Garden walls and outbuildings

Bristol’s Exterior Painting Specialists
Georgian and Regency Stucco Facades
Properties throughout the Clifton and Hotwells conservation area require breathable mineral coatings, not standard masonry paint. Standard masonry paint seals the surface and traps moisture. The render cracks, spalls, and requires expensive repairs within a few seasons. We also offer dedicated conservatory painting services.
We specify breathable mineral coatings on all porous historic stucco. The primer system is confirmed on site after assessing render condition. We also offer dedicated garage door painting services.
Victorian and Edwardian Rendered Terraces
Victorian terraces in Redland, Southville, and Bishopston have a different brief from Georgian stucco. These properties require correct surface preparation and a high-quality flexible masonry paint on the rendered areas. We also offer dedicated pebbledash painting services.
Biological growth is common in Bristol’s high-rainfall climate. We treat it with a fungicidal solution before priming begins. See our render painting page for more detail.
Sash Windows and Exterior Woodwork
Georgian and Edwardian sash windows are original joinery. In Clifton, many have never been replaced. We strip back to sound timber, repair rot, prime correctly, and apply durable exterior gloss or satin.
For full property coverage, see our house painting page.
Ironwork, Balcony Railings, and Gates
Georgian terraces and townhouses in Clifton frequently have cast-iron balcony railings, entrance gates, and boot scrapers. Ironwork requires rust treatment before any paint is applied. Done correctly, ironwork should stay rust-free for ten or more years.
Garden Walls and Outbuildings
Stone boundary walls and outbuildings in Stoke Bishop, Westbury Park, and Sneyd Park are assessed individually. The same breathable approach applies to ancillary structures as to the main facade.

Our Exterior Painting Process
1. Site Assessment
We visit and examine every surface. We check surface type, existing coating condition, render soundness, and any biological growth.
2. Surface Preparation
Surfaces are cleaned of moss, lichen, and loose material. Render is repaired where needed. Timber is stripped to sound material. Biological growth is treated.
3. Priming
Stucco and porous stone get a breathable mineral primer. Bare timber gets a specialist timber primer. Ironwork gets a rust-inhibiting primer.
4. Paint Application
Two finish coats are standard. High-exposure south and west-facing surfaces get a third where appropriate. We monitor forecasts and schedule around the weather.
5. Inspection and Completion
All surfaces are inspected in good light after the final coat has cured. Touch-ups completed before we leave the site. Walk-through with you before closing the job.

Exterior Painting Costs in Bristol
Exterior repaints in Bristol’s premium suburbs vary by property type, surface material, and condition. Projects range from £2,000 for a straightforward Southville Victorian terrace to £10,000+ for a Clifton stucco townhouse.

Surface Type and Paint System
On stucco and porous historic render, breathable mineral systems require careful surface assessment and longer drying times between coats. They outlast standard products significantly.
Surface Area and Access
Three and four-storey Georgian townhouses in Clifton require tower scaffolding. Scaffolding costs are included in the quote. Larger facades take longer to prepare and coat.
Surface Condition
Render requiring repair, extensive biological growth, or timber in poor condition add preparation time. Addressing these correctly is what makes the finish last. Bristol receives above-average annual rainfall. A correctly specified exterior should last eight to twelve years.
