Why Preparation Is Everything

Cabinet painting fails for one reason: the preparation was skipped or done incorrectly. Factory lacquer and stained finishes on quality kitchens are bonded firmly under controlled conditions. A new top coat applied directly over them will not adhere.

Spray-Applied Finish

For clients who can have cabinet doors and drawer fronts removed, we offer a spray-applied finish applied off-site in our workshop. This produces the smoothest result, comparable to the original factory finish.

For clients who cannot or do not wish to remove cabinet doors, we apply a brush-and-roller finish on site. Using the right tools and correct application technique, an on-site finish closely matches the original factory appearance.

2. Written Specification

We confirm the primer system, finish product, colour reference, and application method in writing. You approve this before we order materials.

3. Preparation

Doors and drawer fronts are removed or masked in place. All surfaces are thoroughly abraded, wiped clean, and allowed to dry. Specialist primer is applied.

4. Top Coats

Two to three finish coats applied at the correct interval. High-wear areas around handles and door edges receive additional attention.

5. Rehang and Inspection

Doors are rehung and adjusted for alignment. All surfaces inspected in good light. Touch-ups completed before we leave.

Can you repaint my Neptune kitchen in Farrow & Ball Railings?

Yes. Neptune’s factory lacquer is abraded and primed before the new coat goes on. We use Farrow & Ball Full Gloss or Cabinet Paint as the topcoat.

What happens to the finish around handles over time?

Handle areas take the most wear. With correct preparation and the right finish product, a cabinet repaint should hold for five to eight years. Chipping within months is a preparation failure.

Do you need to remove the cabinet doors?

Not necessarily. For on-site brush-and-roller work, doors can be painted in place. For spray-applied finish, doors come off. We advise at the assessment stage.

How long does the kitchen need to be out of use?

For an on-site finish on a standard kitchen, doors are usable within 24–48 hours of the final coat. Full hardness takes two to three weeks. For spray-applied finish with door removal, typically two to three days.

Do you work with Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, and Zoffany?

Yes. All three are standard cabinet finishes. We advise which product performs best for your kitchen type.

Can you paint just the island in a contrasting colour?

Yes. An island repaint in a contrasting colour is a common standalone brief. We assess the island construction and finish, prepare correctly, and apply the new colour.

Is cabinet painting worth it compared to a new kitchen?

If the carcasses are sound and the issue is colour rather than structure, repainting is significantly better value.

Can you paint solid wood cabinets as well as MDF?

Yes. Solid wood cabinets move more with temperature and humidity than MDF. We use a flexible primer on solid wood and advise on the appropriate top coat.
