Georgian Exterior Painting Services
Stucco-Rendered Facades
Stucco is a lime-based render. It is porous and it must breathe. Standard masonry paint seals the surface and traps moisture. The render blisters, cracks, and spalls within a few seasons.
We specify mineral or silicate-based breathable coatings on all porous historic stucco. See our exterior painting page for the full specification approach.
Georgian Sash Windows and Joinery
Original Georgian sash windows in Clifton properties are 200-year-old joinery. They repay careful preparation: stripping back to sound timber, addressing rot where found, priming correctly, and finishing with a durable exterior gloss or satin.
Ironwork, Railings, and Balconies
Cast-iron balcony railings, entrance gates, boot scrapers, and area railings are a defining feature of Clifton’s Georgian terraces. Ironwork requires rust treatment before any paint is applied. The primer stage is non-negotiable.
Listed Building Considerations
Many individual properties carry Grade II or Grade II* listed building status. Repainting interior walls does not normally require consent. Changing the external colour or applying incompatible materials may require it.

Georgian Interior Painting Services

Lime Plaster Interiors
Georgian and Regency interiors in Clifton and Hotwells were built with lime plaster on lath. This plaster is breathable and flexible. Standard vinyl emulsion seals lime plaster and traps moisture, causing gradual delamination.
We use breathable mineral or clay-based wall paints on lime plaster interiors. See our interior painting page for the full detail.
Cornicing, Ceiling Roses, and Plasterwork
Clifton’s Georgian interiors contain plasterwork that cannot be replaced. We treat decorative plasterwork accordingly: careful masking, no tape directly on fragile surfaces, and hand-cutting of all paint lines against moulded profiles.
Interior Joinery
Panelled doors, deep skirting boards, cornice-level architraves, and window reveals are treated with the same care. Multiple layers of incompatible coatings may have built up over two centuries.
Period-Appropriate Colour Consultation
Georgian interiors and exteriors have strong period colour traditions. Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, and Papers and Paints have developed ranges that align with Georgian colour traditions and perform correctly on lime plaster.
Our Georgian Property Painting Process
1. Property Assessment
We visit and examine every surface in scope. We identify plaster type, existing coatings, joinery condition, and any repairs needed.
2. Written Specification
We produce a written surface-by-surface specification before quoting: primer system, finish product, application method, and repair items.
3. Preparation
Existing surfaces are assessed for compatibility. Incompatible coatings are addressed. Lime plaster receives a breathable primer. Stucco receives mineral primer.
4. Paint Application
Breathable systems require adequate drying time between coats. We build correct drying intervals into the programme.
5. Inspection and Handover
All surfaces inspected in good light. Touch-ups completed. Walk-through with you before close-out.

Georgian Property Painting Costs in Bristol
Georgian property painting in Bristol reflects the scale and architectural significance of the properties involved. It carries a premium over standard decorating because the materials cost more, drying intervals are longer, and the care required around original fabric takes more time.

Surface Type and Paint System
On stucco and porous historic render, breathable mineral paint systems require careful surface assessment and longer drying times between coats. They are the only appropriate choice.
Complexity of Original Features
Rooms with deep Georgian cornicing, ceiling roses, and original sash windows take longer to prepare and paint correctly than plain modern rooms of the same area.
Extent of Remedial Work
Georgian properties may carry incompatible paint layers, minor plaster damage, and joinery issues accumulated over two centuries. Addressing these before painting is included in the scope.
For a whole-house programme covering both interior and exterior phases together, see our house painting page. Call 0117 463 3348 to arrange a site visit.
