Brunel Decorators are interior painters covering properties across Bristol’s premium suburbs and the wider city.
We’ve worked on Georgian townhouses in Clifton, Victorian mansion terraces in Redland, and Edwardian terraces in Bishopston. We know how lime plaster behaves, how to cut in cleanly around deep cornicing, and how to deliver a consistent finish across rooms with high ceilings.

Living Rooms and Reception Rooms
Cutting in cleanly around deep plaster cornicing takes time and precision. On Georgian townhouses in Clifton, ceiling heights exceed 3m, mouldings are layered, and full-height sash window reveals mean light changes significantly across the day.
On lime plaster walls we use breathable paint systems. Standard vinyl emulsion traps moisture in historic fabric and causes the plaster to delaminate over time.
Bedrooms
A bedroom in a Clifton or Redland period property includes more than four walls. Deep skirting boards, picture rails, window reveals, original fireplaces, and built-in wardrobes are all part of the brief. We complete each room fully before moving to the next.
Hallways and Staircases
The hallway in a Clifton Georgian townhouse sets the tone for the whole property. A consistent, clean line from the entrance hall ceiling to the top-landing cornice requires precision and the right access equipment.
For house painting projects covering the whole property, the hallway sequence is planned first.
Kitchens and Utility Rooms
Modern fitted kitchens need hard-wearing finishes on walls, ceiling protection above the hob, and careful cutting-in around units and splashback tiles.
For clients wanting their kitchen cabinet doors refreshed at the same time, see our kitchen cabinet painting page.
Ceilings and Decorative Plasterwork
High ceilings in Clifton and Redland are a specialist brief. Original plaster ceiling roses, coving, and deep cornicing in Georgian and Victorian properties require careful cutting-in and a breathable primer appropriate to aged lime plaster.

Our Interior Painting Process
1. Site Assessment
We visit and examine every room in scope. We confirm the wall type in each space as the primer system differs for each.
2. Room-by-Room Specification
For multi-room projects we prepare a written specification. Primer system, finish product, colour, and sheen level for every surface in every room.
3. Surface Preparation
Walls are washed down, cracks and nail holes filled, loose edges sanded, and the correct primer applied. On lime plaster we use a breathable primer.
4. Paint Application
Walls and ceilings get two finish coats as standard. Woodwork in satin or eggshell gets two or three coats depending on starting condition.
5. Room Sign-Off
Each room is inspected in natural light before we move on. Touch-ups completed before we close out the room.

Interior Painting Costs in Bristol
Interior decorating costs in Bristol reflect the scale and complexity of the city’s period housing stock. Room-by-room pricing typically runs between £900 and £2,000 per room for period properties with high ceilings and original features.

Surface Type
Lime plaster in poor condition, peeling paint, or damaged cornicing all add preparation time. Addressing it properly is what makes the finish last.
Room Scale
A Clifton reception room at 3.2m+ ceiling height takes considerably longer than a Southville bedroom at 2.5m. Area and access requirements increase together.
Finish Specification
Paint choice depends on the surface. On lime plaster, we use breathable products that work with the material rather than against it. Clifton and Hotwells properties frequently have original lime plaster on lath. Budget 20–30% more than you would for an equivalent modern plasterboard surface.
