Pebbledash painting in Bristol by Brunel Decorators, professional masonry painters

Brunel Decorators paint pebbledash across Bristol — interwar semis in Horfield and Westbury Park, postwar estates in Fishponds and Henleaze, and any property where the rough-textured finish needs refreshing.

The textured pebbledash surface holds colour well once properly prepared. A colour change is one of the most dramatic transformations available for a property exterior.

How Pebbledash Is Painted

Pebbledash is not the same as painting a smooth wall. The textured surface requires a long-pile masonry roller to push paint into the crevices between pebbles, followed by a brush to work the coverage home.

A correctly applied pebbledash paint system should last eight to twelve years before needing attention.

Washing and Treating the Surface

The surface must be clean before any paint goes on. We pressure wash all pebbledash surfaces. Where moss, algae, or lichen is present, we apply a mould treatment and allow the surface to dry fully. Painting over untreated biological growth is one of the main reasons pebbledash paint jobs fail.

Repairing Loose Pebbles

On older properties, sections of pebbledash occasionally become detached, leaving bare render patches. These areas need to be filled and blended before painting begins.

Colour Options and Paint Selection

We use breathable masonry paint throughout. A fresh application in warm stone, off-white, or contemporary grey makes an immediate difference on Horfield, Westbury Park, and Bishopston properties. For a full exterior painting project, we handle the full scope.

Partial Pebbledash Finishes

Many Bristol semis have pebbledash on the upper half only, with a smooth or painted brick lower section. We treat the two sections as distinct surfaces with their own preparation and paint specification.

Our Pebbledash Painting Process

1. Surface Assessment

We check the extent of biological growth, any loose or detached pebbles, and the overall condition before quoting.

2. Pressure Washing

The full surface is cleaned to remove dirt, algae, and any loose material.

3. Mould Treatment

Where biological growth is present, a treatment is applied and the surface is allowed to dry fully.

4. Repairs

Loose pebbles and any detached areas are filled and blended.

5. Masking

Windows, doors, sills, and any adjacent brickwork are masked before painting begins.

6. Paint Application

Two coats of breathable masonry paint, applied by long-pile roller and worked in with a brush.

Property Size

3-bed terrace with pebbledash upper half: £550–£900. 3-bed semi (pebbledash throughout): £800–£1,500. 4-bed detached (fully pebbledashed): £1,200–£2,200.

Surface Condition

The extent of biological growth, loose pebbles or detached areas needing repair, and height of the property all drive the price.

Access Requirements

Scaffold tower rental, if required, adds £200–£400. Bristol’s high annual rainfall means biological growth treatment is standard on most north and west-facing surfaces.
