Render Painting in Bristol

Brunel Decorators paint rendered walls across Bristol — from the smooth stucco facades of Clifton’s Georgian terraces to the sand-and-cement render on Redland’s Victorian semis.
A rendered house that is properly maintained and repainted on a sensible cycle holds its finish and its value. Bristol’s mix of Georgian stucco in Clifton and Victorian sand-and-cement render in Redland and Bishopston means surface type varies significantly.

Bristol’s Render Painting Specialists
Smooth and Fine-Textured Render
The most common render type across Bristol’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces is smooth or lightly textured sand-and-cement finish. We pressure wash, treat any biological growth, fill hairline cracks, and apply two finish coats of breathable masonry paint. We also offer dedicated conservatory painting services.
The result is a clean, even surface that should hold for eight to twelve years. For a complete exterior painting project, we handle the full scope.
Hairline Cracks and Surface Repairs
Hairline cracking is normal on older render and does not indicate structural failure. We fill hairline cracks with exterior flexible filler before painting. For textured surfaces like pebbledash, we use a different repair approach.
K-Rend and Polymer Render
K-Rend and similar polymer thin-coat render systems are increasingly common on renovated properties across Bristol. The wrong paint applied to a polymer render system will not bond correctly. We use compatible products.
Lime Render on Period Properties
Lime render is breathable and flexible. It needs breathable coatings: mineral paint or specialist silicate systems. Standard masonry paint is not appropriate. See our Georgian property painting page for the full approach on listed buildings.
Biological Growth Treatment
North-facing rendered elevations throughout Bristol develop algae, moss, and lichen over time. Painting over biological growth without treatment does not remove it. We apply a mould treatment after pressure washing.

Our Render Painting Process
1. Surface Assessment
We inspect the render condition — cracking, biological growth, damp, and any areas of render that have failed.
2. Pressure Washing
The full surface is washed down to remove dirt, algae, and loose material.
3. Mould Treatment
Where biological growth is present, a treatment is applied and the surface is allowed to dry fully.
4. Crack Filling
Hairline cracks are filled with exterior flexible filler and allowed to set.
5. Priming
Bare or repaired areas receive a masonry primer coat before the finish coats.
6. Paint Application
Two coats of breathable masonry paint applied by brush, roller, or spray depending on scale and texture.
