Feature Walls

A feature wall in a Clifton or Redland property is typically a considered design decision. The paper must be straight, the pattern matched precisely at every join, and the edges cut cleanly against cornicing, skirtings, and door frames.

Full-Room Wallpapering

A full-room hang in a Clifton Georgian townhouse is one of the most technically demanding wallpapering briefs in Bristol. We hang lining paper horizontally (cross-lining) before any finish paper on uneven period plaster surfaces.

Lining Paper

Lining paper is strongly recommended on any uneven or period plaster surface. It provides a flat, stable base and prevents the finish paper from telegraphing the unevenness of the wall behind it.

For period properties across Clifton, Hotwells, Redland, and Cotham, we recommend lining as standard.

Wallpaper Removal

Old wallpaper must be removed correctly. On lime plaster walls, aggressive soaking and scraping can damage the plaster. For full interior painting projects following wallpaper removal, we can handle both in the same contract.

Period Properties and Cornicing

Cutting in around a deep Georgian cornice is the most demanding element of period wallpaper hanging. The paper must follow the line of the cornice profile accurately, with no visible gap or overlap.

Our Wallpapering Process

1. Surface Assessment

We examine the wall type, condition, and any existing wallpaper or coatings. We advise on whether lining is recommended.

2. Pattern Planning

For large-repeat or feature papers, we dry-hang the drops and plan the starting position and pattern placement before any paste is applied.

3. Surface Preparation

Existing wallpaper is removed. Walls are filled, sanded, and sealed. Lining paper is hung where recommended.

4. Hanging

Each drop is cut, pasted, and hung to a true plumb vertical. Pattern matching is checked at every join.

5. Inspection

Completed walls are inspected for join visibility, bubbles, and pattern alignment. Final check once fully dry.

Wallpapering Costs in Bristol

Professional wallpaper hanging in Bristol runs approximately £180–£320 per room for standard pattern hanging. Feature walls run £130–£220 as a standalone brief.

Pattern Repeat

Large botanical or scenic repeats (de Gournay, Cole & Son Fornasetti, Zoffany scenic panels) add significantly to hanging time and material waste. Budget 25–40% more for complex large-repeat papers.

Room Scale and Ceiling Height

A Clifton dining room at 3.2m ceiling height is a different scope from a Southville bedroom at 2.4m. Longer drops and more complex access add to the programme.

Lining Paper

Adding cross-lining paper adds £90–£160 per room. On period plaster surfaces, it is strongly recommended and produces a significantly better result.
